Strategy alone is not enough:
execution as a competitive advantage

Harvard Business Review estimates that organisations lose 40% of their strategy's potential value through execution failures. McKinsey confirms: healthy organisations are 3x more likely to outperform over the long term. Execution is not just an operational challenge — it is a competitive advantage.

Having a solid strategy has never been more important. But organisations that truly manage to execute it remain the exception. The differentiator is not the quality of the plan — it is the organisational capacity to turn it into results.

40% of value lost: the real cost of the strategy-to-execution gap

Harvard Business Review estimates that organisations lose an average of 40% of their strategy's potential value through execution failures. This figure is consistently underestimated by leadership teams — because the loss is gradual, invisible, and rarely attributed to its real cause.

The symptoms are well known: delayed projects, missed targets, teams working hard but not in the same direction, decisions constantly escalated to the executive committee. This is not a competence problem. It is a structural execution problem.

Why the gap widens

HBR identifies the main cause not in implementation itself, but in how the plan is conceived — too ambitious, too disconnected from the organisation's actual capabilities, and designed without accounting for real execution conditions on the ground.

Organisational health: the predictor executive committees underestimate

McKinsey's Organisational Health Index (2025–2026) is clear: healthy organisations are 3x more likely to outperform their peers over the long term — across all industries.

Organisational health, as McKinsey defines it, rests on four core capabilities:

  • Align around a shared direction across all levels of the organisation
  • Adapt quickly to external changes without losing coherence
  • Execute with rigour — not occasionally, but repeatably
  • Renew to sustain performance over time

A brilliant strategy carried by an unhealthy organisation will produce mediocre results. A sound strategy carried by a healthy organisation will deliver lasting performance. Organisational health is the prerequisite for any successful strategy execution.

The 4 pillars of rigorous execution

McKinsey (2025) identifies four elements that the best-performing organisations systematically embed in how they operate:

1. Clear accountability

Every decision, every deliverable, every objective has an identified owner — and that ownership is real, not diluted across committees. Organisations that execute well know precisely who is accountable for what.

2. Coordination and control

Cross-team coordination processes are designed to facilitate execution, not just monitor it. Operating rhythms (short stand-ups, actionable dashboards) allow early detection of deviations and fast correction.

3. Execution capabilities

Execution is a craft. High-performing organisations invest in operational skills — project management, performance management, team facilitation — as much as in strategic capabilities.

4. Motivation to deliver

Teams execute better when they understand why their contribution matters, when objectives are realistic, and when achievements are recognised. The motivation to deliver is not a "nice to have" — it is a measurable performance driver.

Diagnostic questions

  • Does everyone in your organisation know exactly what they are accountable for — and can they explain it in 30 seconds?
  • Do your management meetings result in concrete decisions, or just "progress updates"?
  • Do your managers have the skills to monitor and correct execution — not just to plan?
